The IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter has opened up a booth as to promote the chapter. It is jointly coordinated with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT).
International Conference on Marine, Automation Technology (ICMAT 2017)
ICMAT2017 was organized by the Malaysian Inst. of Marine Engineering Technology (MIMET) UniKL. With theme “Propelling & Driving Innovative Ideas”, the conference was held on 15th – 17th March 2017 in Penang. During the event, the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter Chair, Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Rizal Arshad was invited as a keynote speaker. He delivered his keynote title “Robotics for Ocean Applications”.
Technical Talk by Metocean PETRONAS
In conjunction with OES Chapter Meeting which was held on the 10th Mar 2017, the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter also organized a technical talk which was presented by Mr. Mohd Nasir Abdullah. This event was conducted at the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. The talk specifically aimed on PETRONAS Metocean activities in Malaysia. Metocean stands for Meteorology + Oceanography covering PETRONAS for activities such as weather forecast, data analyses, real time monitoring, ocean measurement, underwater measurement and many more.
MARCH 2017:
UCRG Pitching Session @ USM
On 3rd Mar 2017, the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter and the Underwater, Control & Robotic Research Group (UCRG) of USM had organized an activity which required participants to present his/her research work in a short and concise mode. The purpose of the activity is to share research investigation among members and to discuss any relevant issues for the improvement of the research that have been carried out. The project presentation comes either from the final year project students or the postgraduate students.

3rd Annual General Meeting 2017
The 3rd Annual General Meeting of IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter was held on 14th January 2017 in conjunction with IEEE Malaysia Section AGM. The event took place at the Grand Bluewave Hotel, Shah Alam Selangor. During the AGM, activities and financial report for 2016 were reported. The new standing committees for 2017 were also appointed.

2nd Annual General Meeting 2016
The 2nd Annual General Meeting for IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter was held on 17 February 2016 at the Center of Artificial Intelligence & Robotics (CAIRO), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. During the event, new executive committees for 2016 were elected. The meeting also agreed to appoint sub committees which will represent the institution they belong. This is hoped to increase more activities conducted by the IEEE OES members at various institutions and sectors.

The 5th meeting remarked unforgettable event as the chapter received visit from delegates of IEEE OES. Present in the meeting were Rene Garello (IEEE OES President), William (Bill) Kirkwood (IEEE OES Treasurer), Jerry C. Carrol (IEEE OES Junior Past President) and James Barbera (IEEE OES Senior Past President). Their presence to Malaysia was made in conjunction with the Offshore Technology Conference Asia (OTC2016) which was held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
The meeting has led to insightful information and goals for the chapter who just officially registered in 2015. Committee is advised to plan activities such as technical talk or conference which liaised to Distinguish Lecturers Program (DLP) so that the invited speakers from IEEE OES have a chance to attend multiple events organized in SEA region. The meeting also discussed on membership drive with aimed to increase the number of IEEE OES member from Malaysia. Jerry has given the list of active IEEE OES members from Malaysia and some of them are from industrial sectors.

Seminar by DR. Tom Bruce
On 9th March 2016, the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter has technically co-organized a seminar at the Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Tronoh Perak. The sharing session by Dr. Tom Bruce has given an insight to two interesting topics:
- The European Wave Overtopping Manual – A Preview of the Second Edition (EurOtop II)
- Breakwater-integrated Oscillating Water Column (OWC) Wave Energy Converters – Large Scale Model Tests
APRIL 2016:
Visit & Technical Talk @ MIMET, UniKL
On 28th April 2016, the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter has conducted a visit to Malaysia Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (MIMET), UniKL Lumut branch. The one day activities comprised of meet and greet between IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter members to the university faculty members, the membership drive, technical talk and visit to MIMET ship building site and laboratories. The technical talk was presented by Dr. Ahmad Faisal Mohamad Ayob from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu delivering topic entitled “Systematic refitting of conventional ground & surface vehicles towards autonomous capability”.
MAY 2016:
Two Days Workshop @ UTEM, Melaka
A two days workshop was held on 25-26 May, 2016 at the Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTEM). The workshop was conducted by Dr. Rosmiwati Mohd Mokhtar, the secretary of the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter. The two days workshop was filled with knowledge sharing sessions and discussion on topics such as data compression using frequency sampling filter and the role of system identification for underwater system modeling. As part of the activities data collection and measurement was also conducted at the CIA Lab, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, UTEM. A visit to marine and underwater robotics lab was also made whereby activities related to marine engineering conducted at UTEM were shown.
JUNE 2016:
IEEE Membership Drive @ UTHM
IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter together with Faculty of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, UTHM, Young Professionals, IEEE RAS, EMC and Computer Society has organized a “Get to know IEEE” event on 1st June 2016 at UTHM. The event provided the platform for the UTHM committee to understand and get closer to the IEEE community. The participants were introduced with IEEE and the chapters, benefits and fees. The student branch for UTHM was also form during the event.
JULY 2016:
Visit & Technical Talk @ UTP, Perak
On 21st July 2016, the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter has made another visit, this time to the Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Tronoh Perak. The activities conducted include technical talk, postgraduate student presentation, membership drive, visit to laboratories and meeting. For this activity, the technical talk was delivered by Dr. Zool Hilmi Ismail, a treasurer of the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter. His talk titled “A robust formation control for multi-autonomous underwater vehicles for marine surveillance” remarks new control approach such as robust integral sign of error to leader-follower model structure.
Two postgraduate student presentations were also delivered during the activity. First student was Bello Lawal presenting research on marine acoustic and second student was Nur Afande Ali Hussain presenting his research on nonlinear system identification for underwater system model. Aside from technical talk, delegates were also brought to visit laboratories related to oil and gas mining and offshore platform construction at UTP.
AUGUST 2016:
3rd IEEE Final Year Project Online Competition
The IEEE Malaysia Section was organized the final year project competition between month of May to August 2016. The competition was opened to all undergraduate students from all the universities in Malaysia. There are 14 tracks available for the competition and one of it was the Underwater System and Underwater Robotics Track which was sponsored by the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter. From all the video project and poster contested, two students have been chosen as winners.
First prize: Shahirah Shahrizat Whahab (UKM) – Scour monitoring system using image processing
Second prize: Tan Chee Sheng (USM) – River navigation system using autonomous surface vehicle
The first prize winner won RM300 and certificate. The second prize winner won RM200 and certificate. Congratulation to the winners!
SEPTEMBER 2016:
Visit & Technical Talk @ UPSI, Perak
On 2nd September 2016, the IEEE OES Malaysia has organized another visit and technical talk at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Tanjung Malim, Perak. This activity also included meet and greet session with faculty member of Science & Mathematics, UPSI followed by the membership drive, technical talk and a meeting. The technical talk was presented by Dr. Khalid Isa from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) who is also one of the executive committee of the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter. He has delivered talk on titled “The future of underwater robotics”.

APRIL 2015
Meeting:
First Protem Meeting & First AGM
Friday – 17th April 2015, the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter held its first protem committee meeting at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) which is situated in Penang, Malaysia. The meeting was attended by 13 founding members of IEEE OES Malaysia. The attendees came from various public (USM, UTM, IIU, UTHM, UPSI, UMP) and private universities (UTP) around Malaysia including those members from the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN). The event continued with first annual general meeting where the executive committee for IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter was nominated. After the election and voting processes, the following standing committee members for IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter were selected;

Technical Visit:
Technical Visit to RMN (Royal Malaysian Navy)
On 25th April 2015 the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter had organized a trip to Lumut, Perak in conjunction with the 81st Navy Day Celebration at the RMN Lumut Base. During the day, the RMN naval base was opened to public for them to see life at the navy base. Visitors also had chances to see several navy ships include KD Mutiara, KD Jebat, KD Hang Tuah and KD Kelantan. IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter members that joined the trip also bring together their families.
Through this tour, visitors had the opportunity for an up close look at a warship and in understanding the various functions of navy ships. Visitors also had the experience of eating on board as a few ships had opened a floating restaurant to provide experience to civilians sample warship food.
There were also boat ride activities available at the shallow water jetty for those who liked something different. Two combat boats were available to provide opportunities for visitors to experience the navy boat. For visitors who wanted to know more information related to RMN, promotions and career outlets are also located near the pier. Exhibition of Hydrographic Centre, the Dive Center and Mine Warfare and the Special Force Team were available.
The most attractive activity was the Sunset Ceremony. This is a traditional naval ceremony performed at sunset everyday. This ceremony was held at the flight deck of KD HANG TUAH. Overall, the visit exposed OES members to the technologies and capabilities available in the military.

Technical Short Course:
On 13th and 14th May 2015, the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter in collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) had organized a two days short course on principle of underwater acoustics. The short course was delivered by the Chair of IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter, Prof. Dr. Mohd Rizal Arshad.
AUGUST 2015
UTP Professorial Lecture:
The IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter in collaboration with Universti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) had technically co-organized a professorial lecture on 13 August 2016. The lecture on title floating platforms in South East Asia/Australasia and UTS’s Strategic role was delivered by Professor Dr. Kurian Velluruzhathil John.
Technical Talk @ IIUM Gombak
The first technical talk organized by the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter was held on 24th August 2015. The venue took place at the Conference Room, Kulliyyah of Engineering, Islamic International University Malaysia (IIUM), Gombak Selangor. The talk was given by the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter Chair, Professor Dr. Mohd Rizal Arshad. His talk on new roles for underwater system technology researchers in the new millennia ignited some insights to underwater system technology in Malaysia and worldwide.
SEPTEMBER 2015:
National Technical Seminar on Underwater System Technology (NUSYS’15)
The 8th National Technical Seminar on Underwater System Technology 2015 (NUSYS’15) was organized on the 21th September 2015 at the Institut Oseanografi & Sekitaran (INOS), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Malaysia. The national seminar was jointly organized by Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), IEEE-OES and Subsea Explore services Sdn. Bhd. About 180 delegates among university and industrial researchers attended the seminar.
The seminar was officiated by the Political Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Datuk Hj. Abd Halim Bin Jusoh, followed by a keynote address by Prof. Dato’ Dr. Nor Aieni Binti Haji Mokhtar, entitled “Diving to the Future of Underwater Technology”. The themes set by the keynote address were followed by five technical speakers delivered by representatives from universities and industries, which are;
- Decommissioning of Offshore Platform, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Shahir Liew, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS.
- Latest Technology in Subsea Engineering Practices, Mr. Syamsul Nizam, Subsea Explore Services Sdn. Bhd.
- Subsea Riser and Pipelines, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norhazilan Md. Noor, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
- Subsea Pro Simulation, Dr. Jaswar Koto, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
- Innovations in Underwater Engineering and Technologies, Dr. Ahmad Faisal Mohamad Ayob, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu.
A round table forum and discussions were conducted in the afternoon sessions under the theme of “The Frontier of Underwater Engineering and Technologies”. The discussions were moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Khalid Samo with four panels; Prof. Dr. Rizal Arshad, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norhazilan Md. Noor, Dr. Jaswar Koto and Mr. Syamsul Nizam. The forum aimed to raise the awareness regarding the issues governing the underwater engineering and the methods to counter and improve upon the issues.
In the forum session, the industrial counterpart represented by Mr. Syamsul Nizam encouraged the participants to contribute in a small and incremental way i.e. in a form of building blocks that can be shared and used by other teams. Such methods shall ease the design burden and focused on smaller dimension of issues such as thrusters, visualization, communication and workflow. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norhazilan and Dr. Jaswar Koto highlighted that the current subsea piping system technologies has reached its maturity. Therefore they encouraged that a more intelligent system and simulation software should be developed to conduct preventive maintenance and reduce the risk of loss due to unexpected downtime.

IEEE OES Student Research Colloquium 2015
The IEEE OES Student Research Colloquium on Environmental Intelligence was held in Kuala Lumpur on 16th October 2015. The event was jointly organized by the IEEE Malaysia Section, IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter and Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIRO), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). There were six students presented their research during the colloquium. The event was also included a talk entitled “A Model-Free Approach to Wind Farm Control using Multi-Resolution Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation” which was delivered by Dr. Mohd Ashraf Ahmad from Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP).
NOVEMBER 2015:
Visit to IIUM Kuantan Marine Science Lab, Kuantan Pahang
On 26th November 2015 the IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter has made another visit, this time to the IIUM Kuantan Marine Science Lab at Kuantan, Pahang. Several activities have been conducted for this one day event. The technical Talk on Underwater Acoustics was presented by Dr Ikhwan Hadi Yaacob from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). The activity was further carried out by a workshop on ASV System Development which was mainly conducted by Dr Zulkifli Zainal Abidin from IIUM. The ASV demo was also made at the lake. Even though it was raining during the demo, it did not lose members commitment in participating to the program. The one day event at the IIUM Kuantan was also fulfilled with Chapter meeting and IEEE OES membership drive.

DECEMBER 2015:
Professor Talk by Professor Dr Mohd Rizal Arshad
On 9th December 2015 the professor talk was held at the auditorium of USM Engineering Campus, Nibong Tebal Perak. The IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter Chair was one of the two professors that delivering the keynote on that day. This event was held as a remark to the appointment of him as a professor. Congratulation Professor Dr Mohd Rizal Arshad!
