THE 11TH NATIONAL TECHNICAL SEMINAR ON UNMANNED SYSTEM TECHNOLOGY 2019 (NUSYS’19)

The 11th National Technical Seminar on Unmanned System Technology 2019 (NUSYS’19) aimed at presenting current research being carried out in the listed area. The idea of the seminar is for the scientists, scholars, engineers and students from Universities in Malaysia and the industry to present ongoing research activities, and hence to foster research relations between the Universities and industries. The seminar provides opportunities for the delegates to exchange new ideas and application experiences face to face, to establish business or research relations and to find global partners for future collaboration. The seminar would offer a number of invited lectures from renowned speakers all over the country.

NUSYS’19 is the premier interdisciplinary platform for the presentation of new advances and research results in the fields of Unmanned System Technology. The seminar will bring together leading scientists, researchers, engineer, scholars and students in the domain of interest from around the world. Short Biography

Mr. Mohd Fairuz is currently Fugro’s Project Manager, overseeing and responsible for the company’s geophysics survey project in Asia Pacific. Before joining Fugro, Mr. Fairuz had worked as Business Development Manager with a Malaysian survey company, where he was responsible for spearheading the effort in developing the Geophysical business line in line with technical expertise.

 Prior to this, he has previously worked as an Engineer, Senior Engineer & AUV Supervisor since 2007, with career in the offshore geophysical survey spanning 11 years throughout the globe with several local and international companies. Mr. Mohd Fairuz is notably involved as one of Fugro’s Lead Engineer for the largest underwater survey operation in the world, the MH370 Search.

 He graduated with B.Eng. in Mechatronics Engineering from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and attained Master’s Degree in Engineering Business Management from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 2018.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hanafiah Yussof

Short Biography

Dr. Hanafiah Yussof is the Founder, Board of Director and Group Chief Executive Officer of Robopreneur Sdn Bhd. With more than 17 years of experience in robotics research and development, Dr. Hanafiah is not only an academician, researcher, innovator, game changer and well describe as a symbolic of an emerging role that is the key to achieving corporate-wide adoption of robotics technology in business.   Dr. Hanafiah holds PhD in Information Science from Nagoya University Japan specializing in humanoid robot. Dr. Hanafiah extended his research in humanoid robotics by developing tele-rehabilitation system employing humanoid robot in Autism rehabilitation. Holding permanent position as Associate Professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Dr. Hanafiah venture into business by establishing  Robopreneur Sdn Bhd in 2015 to commercialize his research products and explore service robotics business.  

Recognized as the pioneer in Service Robotics Industry in Malaysia by the Malaysia Investment Development Authority (MIDA), Robopreneur features a solid foundation in industrial R&D specializing in developing service robots and Artificial Intelligent (AI) solutions, with team of local talents at the new office setup in Cyberjaya. The company is currently undergoing several projects including development of first Malaysian made Humanoid Robot; a project funded by the Ministry of Finance Malaysia. The company is also venturing into AI solutions, Additive Manufacturing and Smart Manufacturing as technology solutions provider for Malaysia 4th Industry Revolution Policy (Industry 4Ward). With strong business corporate management, leadership and deep technical knowledge in robotics, Dr. Hanafiah believes that Robopreneur will become a worldclass robotics company and making Malaysia as one of the producer and exporter of service robots to the world.

Dr. Hanafiah also holds prominent position in robotics professional community. He was the Chairman of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) Malaysia Chapter from 2013 until 2015, Editors in several high-impact journals and well known among robotics scientists and researchers. He also serves as Visiting Professors at University of Toyama Japan, and Visiting Researcher at Nagoya University and Hosei University Japan. Dr. Hanafiah have received several national and international awards such as ASME Best Mechatronics Paper Award and Nagoya University Award for Contribution to International Exchange between Japan and Malaysia.

Short Biography

Kamarul studied ACCA at Nottingham Trent University and started his first career as an Accountant in the City of London (1989-1993). He also studied M.Sc in Information System Management at University of Salford. After spending 10 years in the UK, he returned to Malaysia and joined Computer Associates International (CAI) in 1995 and quickly rose to become the Director and Country Manager for Malaysia and Brunei 3 years later. Kamarul is also a serial technopreneur with many start-ups under his belt. From Malaysia’s first web TV to application development to financial services and even construction companies. His first entrepreneurship journey began with an Interactive new media production agency. Among the biggest project was for the development of human development strategy and training material and contents for Quality Management System, Value Based Management and Operational Performance Improvements for an Oil and gas Fortune 500 company. And also corporate communication consulting for an offshore marine service provider and help the company grow from a single FPSO to a large fleet of 7 and ranked 4th globally.  It was in November 2014 when Aerodyne was born. It started off as a drone based visual company but transformed its way into an AI-driven, end-to-end enterprise level solutions provider. Kamarul is a thinker and futurist with deep passionate interest in technology and human resource development and how it will impact the next generation. His free time is spent on researching and developing ideas for the future. He is a seasoned traveller who have visited over 98 countries around the world.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hairi Zamzuri

Short Biography

Dr Hairi Zamzuri currently lead eMooVit Technology to commercialize Mobility On-Demand autonomous shuttle. Establish in 2017, the company is located at Futurise Center, Cyberjaya. Our aim is to design and deploying roadworthy driverless vehicle in urban area in Malaysia.  Where the solution provides a revolutionise cost effective and internet enabled autonomous software solutions where it capable to equip in from mobile robot, passenger transport to freight mover. He has 10 years of experiences in research, design and testing of autonomous and intelligent vehicle. He also involves in design and consultation on the development of active safety technology for 5 years for Proton Sdn Bhd. 

Dr Hairi Zamzuri is also an academic staff with title of Associate Professor in Malaysia Japan International Institute of Technology, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and was a Head of Electronic System Engineering.  He received his B.Electrical Eng in control system from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Master of Electrical Engineering at the same university, and Ph.D. in the field of Artificial intelligence and control design from Loughborough University in 2008. Publish more than 100 papers with related to autonomous and active safety technology before joining industries to further commercialise the technology.

NUSYS’18 [TOP]

The 10th National Technical Seminar on Underwater System Technology 2018 (NUSYS’15) was organized by Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Pahang on the 26-27 September 2018 at the Library, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Pekan Campus, Pahang, Malaysia. For this year, “Deeper Discoveries” was selected as the NUSYS’18 theme. NUSYS’18 was jointly organized by IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society (IEEE-OES) Malaysia Chapter, Malaysian Society for Automatic Control Engineers (MACE) IFAC NMO and Institute of Engineer Malaysia (IEM) Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture Technical Division (MNATD).

Hundreds of attendees, paper presenters, keynote and participants from universities and industries in Malaysia have benefited in many ways from this seminar. Three keynote speakers from universities and industry addressed to audience and shared knowledge and rich experience of underwater technology and marine in their research and company.  57 papers were presented by authors in Technical Sessions that divided into four Parallel Sessions. The papers had been classified into the following four categories:

  • Underwater Technology and Marine
  • Applied Electronics and Computer Engineering
  • Control, Instrumentations & Artificial Intelligent Systems
  • Sustainable Energy & Power Electronics

All accepted and presented papers will be published in Lecture Notes Electrical Engineering – Springer (index by Ei and Scopus).

The objectives of the seminar are threefold;

  1. To accommodate a medium to discuss a wide range of underwater system technology between universities and industries.
  2. To disseminate the latest technology in the field of underwater engineering
  3. To provide an opportunity for researchers to present their paper in electrical & electronics engineering and underwater system technology area.

The first day of seminar started with welcoming speech by Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Rizal Arshad, Chairman of IEEE-OES Malaysia Chapter and officiated by the Deputy Dean (Academic) Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hamdan Daniyal. The 1st keynote speaker address by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aidy @ Mohamed Shawal M. Muslim, the Director of Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu,  entitled “Exploring Application of Remote Sensing in Underwater Mapping”, followed by Parallel Sessions I.

The 2nd keynotes speaker address by Mr. Mirza Iryawan Hamza, Technical Director of Temasek Hidroteknik Sdn. Bhd. (Survey Division) & Temasek Allied Engineering (Instrumentation Division) was conducted in the afternoon sessions entitled “Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) for Coastal Hydrographic Surveys” and followed by Parallel Sessions II.

On the second day, the seminar started with Parallel Sessions III and followed by the 3rd keynotes speaker address by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Farid Muhamad Said, Senior Lecturer at Department of Aeronautic, Automotive & Ocean Engineering, School of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia entitled “Development of an ROV: Antarctic Expedition and Underwater Observation for Industry Application”. The seminar ended with Parallel Sessions IV and finished at 1.00 afternoons.
